Software Engineer

Our requirements

• 3-5 years of experience writing production code, primarily in Python.
• Strong Python skills, including modern, idiomatic Python, typing, pytest, packaging, dependency management, and sensible approaches to concurrency.
• Hands-on production experience with AWS and core services, particularly queue- and event-driven architectures using SQS/SNS, Lambda, and Step Functions.
• Experience writing and maintaining production Infrastructure as Code using Terraform (or CDK/CloudFormation), including reusable modules, remote state management, plan reviews, and drift detection.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI, containers, PR-based workflows, and automated testing and deployment.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or columnar data warehouses such as Redshift, including query plans, indexing, and performance optimisation.
• Comfortable working in a brownfield environment, with experience replacing or migrating live systems through parallel runs, data reconciliation, and carefully planned cutovers without data loss. Able to read and understand unfamiliar legacy code, primarily C#/.NET in this case.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with UK-based stakeholders in English, gather knowledge from system owners, and clearly document solutions for others to maintain and operate.

Optional

• Experience with high-volume messaging or notification systems, including SES, email deliverability, and bounce and complaint handling.
• Experience with dbt or other SQL transformation frameworks, Airflow/MWAA at scale, or CDC-based data replication.
• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS data models, GDPR and consent management, or the marketing/CRM domain.

Your responsibilities

• Rebuild campaign delivery into robust, scalable services. Develop Python services responsible for composing, queuing, and sending high-volume email and SMS using event-driven architecture based on SQS, SES, and Lambda, with reliable retry mechanisms, dead-letter handling, and idempotency.
• Engineer the data layer. Build pipelines that transform warehouse segmentation, vehicle stock, and service history into audience lists, while ensuring accurate consent management, suppression logic, and data quality for every campaign.
• Help untangle and redesign a multi-tenant data model, moving from a fragmented per-tenant database estate towards a coherent architecture, with migrations that can safely run against live client data.
• Define and manage the infrastructure entirely in Terraform, including reusable modules, reviewed plans, and managed state, ensuring environments can be reproduced from an empty AWS account.
• Deliver through robust CI/CD pipelines, replacing manual deployments with automated processes covering both application code and database schemas, including automated testing, versioned migrations, and safe rollback mechanisms.
• Work effectively with AI-assisted development tools, using Claude for code reviews, test generation, debugging, and documentation to increase productivity and scale your impact across a large technology estate.
